Happy birthday, Prince George

It’s been a tough year for Prince George.

His first 12 months have been filled with so many challenges – entering a new world, eating solids, playing with toys, bonding with his parents and extended family, being adored by millions and, it appears, learning to walk.
He has already been dubbed a fashion icon, with the little outfits he wears selling out just as fast as his mother’s dresses.

He was called the “republican slayer” after approval ratings for the royals soared in Australia and New Zealand after Prince George went on his first official tour there in April (oh yeah, his parents, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, were there, too).

Some have even said he saved the monarchy (though monarchists would argue it wasn’t in need of “saving,” he has certainly got people talking about it more).

But in the end, we all have to remember, Prince George is still just a one-year-old.

He cried loudly in his first few months. He steals toys from other children at playgroups. He loves wombats. He can get grumpy when his nap schedule is disrupted. When learning to feed himself, cousin Mike Tindall said it was “carnage … he’d got to that stage where more food goes on the table than in his mouth.”

In the upcoming year, it would be great to see more of Prince George because, you know, kids grow up so fast. Hopefully Kate and William share more of their son, but if they don’t want to, we have to respect that. It’s understandable they will want to shield Prince George as much as possible.

The hysteria around his birth, and now the intense media attention ahead of his first birthday, is perhaps more than any other royal has experienced. He is the future king, but in today’s society, he’s a celebrity (particularly to non-Commonwealth countries).

Last week I saw photos of Prince George being walked by his nanny in a London park. They were paparazzi shots that no British media would touch.

I would hope as Prince George gets older and understands what those people with cameras want, everyone does what they can to keep from scaring him and remember and respect: He’s still just a child. He has no idea he’s royalty, he has no idea he’s the future king. He will know that soon enough.

But for now, let’s just let him be a one-year-old.
