On President Trump first day in office, Trump signed an executive order that renames the little-known but highly respected United States Digital Service office as the United States DOGE Service, referring to the Department of Government Efficiency, an effort helmed by tech billionaire and Trump ally Elon Musk.
The DOGE helmed by Elon Musk appears to be focusing on technology and personnel in its stated goal to cut government spending. Staffers connected to DOGE and often to Musk’s companies, including SpaceX and Tesla, are fanning out across federal agencies, where they are gaining access to sensitive systems and information on government payments and employees.
The Trump administration and Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (Doge) have moved to take control of – and possibly shut down – an agency set up to protect consumers in the wake of the 2007-8 financial crisis.
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) oversees banks and holds vast troves of consumer data.
As part of the US Federal Reserve, the CFPB is an independent agency, however Trump’s budget director was installed as its director on Friday, and Doge officials have gained access to the agency’s computer systems.
The effort to shut down USAID was the most visible result of Trump dispatching billionaire Elon Musk and his aides to review programs and the legitimacy of spending at dozens of federal government agencies.
Trump offered virtually all the government’s 2.3 million civilian workers a chance to resign and continue to get paid through Sept. 30 without working, but a federal judge paused the offer until he holds a new hearing Monday afternoon on its legality.
Trump said all government agencies would be subject to financial reviews, including one of the biggest targets, the Defense Department, where Musk has billions of dollars of contracts.
